The Jimmy Stewart Museum is located at 835 Philadelphia Street, Indiana PA 15701. The birthday event will be held at the museum from Noon to 2pm ET on Saturday May 19th. May 13th to May 19th is National Police Week and as we did last year we honor law enforcement with daily specials. We have episodes of all the top cop dramas of the era including Dragnet, Tales Of The Texas Rangers, Broadway Is My Beat, Calling All Cars and Police Headquarters.

Also we mark the 70th anniversary of the debut of The Whistler with the very first episode plus some new to the channel offerings.

Birthday week tributes for Henry Fonda, Joseph Cotten, author Daphne Du Maurier (The Birds), musical director Meredith Willson (Burns & Allen Show) and Quiz Kid Joel Kupperman.

A very busy week for birthdays beginning with Eve Arden (Our Miss Brooks); we also celebrate centennial birthdays for both Bret Morrison (The Shadow) and Ian Martin (Cloak & Dagger, Suspense) and honor a radio legend who actually made to his centennial, Norman Corwin (he passed away in October at age 101!).

We’ll also present two different Bing Crosby  birthday week specials and mark the 80th anniversary of Jack Benny’s debut on radio by playing a “First & Finale” special. That is when we play the a debut followed by a final episodes. In the case of Benny, the first is The Canada Program from May 2nd, 1932 and then The Jack Benny Program from May 22nd, 1955.

We open this week with a tribute for 60 Minutes newsman, Mike Wallace. We will play an hour long special with a then 20 something Wallace announcing for The Green Hornet and Sky King.

Also this week a new to the channel Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar Marathon. The Alvin Summers Matter was featured on When Radio Was but we came into it in the middle, so I have scheduled all five parts in our usual marathon format.

We have centennial birthday specials for Al Hodge (The Green Hornet) and Wendy Barrie (Inner Sanctum Mysteries and Suspense); we also mark the birthdays of the following folks among others; Betty Lou Gerson (The Whistler), Ted Osborne (Inner Sanctum), Arthur Lake (Blondie), William Holden (Guest on Bob Hope Show) and Bob Hastings (87 this week he stars as Archie Andrews).

Hope all of you interested have been able to get the online service up and running. It not only makes listening much more convenient but offers up a total number of listeners which is important to help prove how popular RadioClassics really is.

Before I detail the shows this week I wanted to mention that a friend of mine author Bill Fitzhugh has a new book out and it is wonderful. The wife and I both just finished it, and like all of his works, it is hilarious. No money changing hands, and no obligation on your part, but just wanted to let you know. It is called The Exterminators and is a sequel to his debut novel Pest Control (a decade or so and 7 books later!)

Okay on to radio!

More clarification about When Radio Was, yes the format is different and not always the best fit for the satellite radio channel, but remember, it is designed for the regular radio stations it plays on (about 200 across the U.S. and Canada). So the commercials air differently and some serialized programs are spread out over multiple weeks. Yes, the Friday Johnny Dollar serial is just one installment at at time, but I promise you I will continue to also play Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar five-part marathons nearly every week.

Let’s celebrate the much bigger picture; we have the channel online now and on your smart phones, plus lots of “new” content is being added.

This week we have a Superman Marathon, a two-hour presentation of a August 1946 storyline; A Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar Marathon; A two-hour Fibber McGee & Molly block; Lux Radio’s version of “The Treasure Of the Sierra Madre” followed by Jack Benny’s parody of that same picture; new to the channel this week Easter episodes from The Life Of Riley and Phil Harris & Alice Faye; and birthday week tributes for the following among others:

I want to thank all of you for your patience and persistence it this issue. I have shared with the “higher-ups” literally thousands of listener emails asking for the addition of the channel to those services, and that was a big help it getting it done.

This marks the second week of the addition of the regular radio series, When Radio Was to the satellite radio channel. I realize the format for it is different (it was designed for radio stations formats) but please understand the addition of this show was part of a much bigger deal with our exclusive content provider, Radio Spirits which facilitated the inclusion of Channel 82 to the Sirius XM online service and mobile device app. Plus lots of “new” content will be coming to the channel in the near future.

While some parts of When Radio Was will be quite familiar (same host, some of the same series and episodes) there is new stuff on it every week as well, and you will finally be able to get involved in ongoing serialized series, if you like. For example right now we are featuring the soap opera Mary Foster, The Editor’s Daughter on Wednesdays and Chandu, The Magician on Thursdays.

This first week of April brings with it birthday celebrations for Bette Davis, Jack Webb, Gregory Peck, Spencer Tracy, Frances Langford, Lou Merrill, John Brown, Maurice Tarplin, Bea Benaderet and Fran Carlon. We also welcome back Major League Baseball with some annual traditions including Gary Cooper as Lou Gehrig in Lux Radio Theatre’s “Pride Of The Yankees” and hall of famers Babe Ruth and Jackie Robinson stopping by The Bob Hope Show. Also, Brooklyn Dodger manager Leo Durocher on The Jack Benny Program and Bud Abbott and Lou Costello perform “Who’s On First”.

More new stuff this week on the channel. First of all as you’ll notice our exclusive content provider has provided us with their terrestrial (regular) radio syndicated program, When Radio Was. It will air daily at Noon ET (11am CT, 10am MT, 9am PT) Monday through Friday then on Saturday mornings at 8am ET and Sunday afternoons at 6pm ET (3pm PT).

While you’ll know the host of When Radio Was pretty well you’ll also hear how these classic shows are presented for regular radio. It will feature many shows you are familiar with plus lots of “new” stuff.

Also as I mentioned earlier, after thousands of listeners emails (and my frequent begging) RadioClassics is now set to be available online (and as a mobile app for iPhones, etc)

These changes not only make listening more convenient, but also will lead to lots of “new to the channel” episodes and series in the coming months.
