Before I get to the channel, I want to share with you a little shout out to a big channel fan and friend. You have heard me talk about Hollywood screenwriter, Derek Haas in the past and he currently is co-producing and co-writing the NBC series Chicago Fire. Well, Derek also is a very talented fiction writer and in the past I was lucky enough to do the narration for his first two novels The Silver Bear & Columbus. Well, his most recent book The Right Hand is a thrilling spy novel, and if you like that sort of thing, I think you’ll love it. Derek also runs the website Popcorn Fiction a growing collection of pulp fiction style short stories penned by many of Hollywood’s top screenwriters and performers.  I hope to sit down again with Derek Haas in the near future and talk about his projects and his love for RadioClassics.

Okay on the the channel: Lots of great birthday tributes and new to the channel offerings this week. Topping the list a centennial birthday celebration for actor/singer/comedian Danny Kaye and the return of Poe Man’s Radio (celebrating Edgar Allan Poe’s 204th birthday). But we also mark the birthdays of the following folks among others: Cary Grant; Margaret O’Brien (the child actress is 76 this week); William Bendix (The Life Of Riley); Steve Dunne (Sam Spade); Elliott Reid (now 93 and featured in Escape & Suspense); composer Cy Feuer (Escape) and producer/director Jaime Del Valle (The Line-up; Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar).

New to the channel offerings from Jack Benny; The Whistler; Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar; The Life Of Riley; Suspense; The Weird Circle; The Hall of Fantasy; The Screen Director’s Playhouse; Wild Bill Hickok, Gunsmoke and more.

Fans of the channel can now get their own copy of my personal favorite radio shows.  Radio Classics Selected By Greg Bell is a 10 CD collection with my introductions and wrap-ups just like I do on my satellite and regular radio shows.

Also remember we are still looking for folks to join us on the Radio Spirits Old-Time Radio Cruise departing June 22nd 2013 from the New York City area for Bermuda for a 5-day cruise which will include many classic radio themed events including live on stage re-creations. Some Cabins are still available and you can learn more at this link http://www.cruisingwithgregbell.com/

  1. Lana says:

I lost my mother of 89 years, five months short of turning 90 during the holidays. I know I am not the only one in the world to lose a mother but it was due to a tragic accident and I am in very deep mourning right now.
The reason I am telling my story is because she lived in the days of the Great Depression and WWII. This would have been when most of these radio stars were in their prime. So, I am finding comfort in listening to the many programs which I am sure she listened to in her younger years.

    • Will says:

Sorry for the loss of your mother. I know what you mean about finding confort in listening to OTR. When my mother passed they played a program (I forget which one) from 06/25/1939 and she was one month old at the time. I wondered if my grandmother had heard it when my mother was one month old.

    • Cora says:

Oh dear. I am so very sorry for your loss, Lana. I was wondering where you were. I too lost my mother near the holidays. I know what you mean about living through the depression, and WWII. They learned a lot on how to survive many horrors. Maybe that is why comedys were so popular. It is nice to wonder if they listened to the same shows that we are now enjoying for the first time. Fondly, Cora

  2. RevBryon says:

Just watching Netflix, an episode of Dragnet, the big producer, martin milner (Adam 12),(playing the kid picked up for selling porno) and several others heard on the channel in that one. Would be good if I could have screen capped a few for your postings. Different ending, same results. Never went to the office of the guy, but great just the same. Always fun to see stars younger and faces for voices I hear every day on XM.

  3. Gunrunner says:

What’s up with the timing today? I tuned in at 10:00am to listen to Hawk Larabee, (I listen about 8 to 10 hours every day), and I had missed Hawk and they were already 20 minutes into Gunsmoke. What gives? I had also listened at 4:00 this morning and noticed that there was no commercial break between Dimension X and Lights Out.

    • GregBell says:

Computer glitched big time – dropped all the modern commercials which knocks the start and end times back so everything starts way to early. Was repaired later in the morning.

Sorry. You can catch the replays of Hawk and Gunsmoke on Thursday.

      • Gunrunner says:

Thanks, Greg. I indeed did catch the replays and was able to hear Hawk and the whole Gunsmoke episodes. Great radio! I LOVE THE WAY YOU DO THE ROTATING SCHEDULE! Thanks again.

I heard Dr Kildare’s ‘Carew Gets Medical Examiner Mixed Up’ episode today. I was pleasantly surprised and very amused at Dr. Kildare’s uttering of, ‘I’m a doctor, not a promoter.’.
