The final week of May is absolutely filled to the brim! We have our annual Memorial Day Tributes, including some new stuff, plus tons of birthday tributes. This year, in addition to Norman Corwin’s On A Note of Triumph V-E Day Celebration which once again includes my past visits with both Corwin and radio actor and WWII vet, Cliff Carpenter, two other Memorial Day specials are also airing. They include the new to the channel series, Words At War plus Lux Radio Theater’s adaptation of the 1942 WWII picture “Wake Island”.
We’ll have, not one but, two different birthday specials for Vincent Price. One of them features two episodes of The Saint; Escape’s “Three Skeleton Key” plus some of my past visit with his son, V. Barrett Price and his daughter, Victoria Price. The other special finds Price in three Suspense productions; “Name Of The Beast”, “The Hunting Trip” and “Pit & The Pendulum” as well as Yours Truly Johnny Dollar’s “The Price Of Fame Matter.”
Fred Allen’s birthday special includes two new to the channel offerings; The Screen Director’s Playhouse version of his film, “It’s In The Bag” and The Family Theater’s “William The Terrified” narrated by Allen and starring Dennis Day.
Additional birthday tributes led by a centennial celebration for Stacy Keach Sr (director of Tales Of The Texas Rangers) plus Bob Hope (Lux Radio Theater’s “Fancy Pants” and Screen Director’s Playhouse’s “The Paleface”); John Wayne (Lux Radio Theater’s “She Wore A Yellow Ribbon”, Screen Director’s Playhouse’s “Fort Apache”); Al Jolson (Kraft Music Hall); Don Ameche (The Bickersons, Chase & Sanborn Show); Ben Alexander (Dragnet, The Great Gildersleeve, Martin & Lewis Show); Norris Goff (Lum and Abner); author Dashiell Hammett (Sam Spade, The Fat Man) and more.
