As we do each week on RadioClassics, we celebrate the birthdays of a number of familiar folks including a major movie star, a major television star and a radio singer/comedian; as in Jimmy Stewart, Raymond Burr and Dennis Day.
Before I details those three, here are some other highlights – a 90-minute Man of Steel Marathon with a six-part Superman storyline from the summer of 1940, Robert Montgomery in Lux Radio Theater’s 1939 version of “The Count Of Monte Cristo.” An Arthur Conan Doyle birthday tribute featuring two from Sherlock Holmes plus his story, “The Lost Special” as presented on Escape. Additional birthday tributes for the following folks: Herbert Marshall (The Man Called X); Tony Barrett (Suspense, Adventures Of Frank Race, The Mysterious Traveler); radio director Jock McGregor (Nick Carter, The Crime Club, The Sealed Book); Jeanne Bates (a featured role in a Suspense) and bandleader Meredith Willson (The Burns & Allen Show).
Back to our primary birthday folks:
A two-hour special for Dennis Day including two from his comedy series (A Day In The Life Of Dennis Day) plus a couple Jack Benny Program episodes.
Raymond Burr will be featured in Fort Laramie, Pat Novak For Hire as well as new to the channel productions of The Family Theater and Night Beat.
Jimmy Stewart stars in The Six Shooter, Suspense’s “Mission Completed” and Lux Radio Theater’s “Made For Each Other”. Plus, I also will share with you portions of my visit with Charles & Erna Reinhart, the c0-authors of the very comprehensive book, Jimmy Stewart On The Air which covers Stewart’s entire radio career.
